Biography
Freddy Macha has a personal, social message of educating himself, those around him or entertaining through his feel good factor music. His great grand father, Abraham Macha was advisor to Chief Meli of the Wachagga tribe who was hanged, publicly naked at Old Moshi by German colonialists in 1892 for defying foreign occupation. His grandparents were charismatic orators and religious leaders; one of them Reverend Anael Macha is a revered writer of etiquette and moral justice. The Machas hail from the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, highest mountain in Africa.
In 1981 Freddy received the BBC Poetry Prize. In 1995 his short story was amongst winners of the Commonwealth competition in London.
Macha was co-founder of Sayari cultural band in 1980 which fused music and poetry in multiple languages and instruments. Sayari was highly acclaimed at the Oslo International Theatre Festival in 1984.
Freddy has worked with artists and musicians in many countries eg. Germany, Switzerland (Rose Marie Doblies, the opera singer) and the Caribbean. In Brazil he was lead singer and multi instrumentalist for Os Galas band between 1988-1992.
He currently lives in London leading workshops in schools, prisons and cultural centres. Between 1998 to 2001 he promoted world music at Bar Lorca and recently Jazz and poetry with Global Fusion Music and Arts. He is part of the newly formed Africans in London TV (www.ailtv.com) as researcher and presenter.
